Trefossa

Trefossa (Paramaribo, January 15, 1916 — Haarlem, February 3, 1975) was a Surinamese poet and writer who is best known for coining the term ‘srefidensi’. He worked as an editor of various cultural magazines and was one of the first poets to write poetry in Sranan Tongo. Born as Henny Frans de Ziel, he became a teacher and remained involved with education throughout his life. Trefossa was commissioned to write new lyrics for the Surinamese National Anthem in 1959.
