Anita Kluge
Anita Kluge is an artist, originally from Bhopal, India. For Kluge, clay is a very special art medium. When she take clay in my hands, she is able to connect with the earth.
She is inspired by her grandmother’s tribe, namely the Gond tribe. The Gond people belong to one of the largest and oldest tribes in India. In their art they make extensive use of complementary colours and have a great emphasis on nature with subjects such as the earth, fire, birds, animals, water, fish, people and the Tree of Life. The use of complementary colours in Gond art is only used in wall paintings and other 2D art, but not in 3D art such as sculptures and figures. Kluge saw this as inspiration to discover new techniques that could bring these complementary colours to life in my her sculptures.
After thorough research, she has also been very inspired by the art techniques from Japan and Korea. By experimenting with techniques such as mishima, nerikomi and kintsugi she is able to bring the complementary colours of the Gond murals to life in three-dimensional sculptures that radiate the spirit of the Gond tribe.
