    Chaw Ei Thein

Chaw Ei Thein (b. 1969, Yangon, Myanmar) is a Burmese visual and performance artist whose multidisciplinary practice examines memory, displacement, political violence and collective resistance. Working across performance, installation, painting, textiles and video, she explores the intersections of personal experience and political history – transforming lived experience into poetic acts of remembrance, resilience, and social engagement. After earning a Bachelor of Law from the University of Yangon in 1994, Thein dedicated herself to a full-time artistic practice, building upon the foundation established by her father, artist Maung Maung Thein. Her work challenges censorship, militarisation and authoritarianism while exploring themes of identity, exile, feminism and artistic freedom.
