Workshop: Moulding the Mask, Finding the Face
As part of the exhibition Shapeshifters: On Wounds, Wonders and Transformation, Framer Framed presents Moulding the Mask, Finding the Face: a two-day mask making workshop exploring memory, heritage and creative ritual through the tactile process of papier-mâché and clay. The workshop is led by Malaika and Chimira Obiefule.
During this workshop, participants are guided to craft personal masks using simple, home-made and found materials, while reflecting on the stories, roots and emotions that shape them. Each session weaves practical making together with gentle ritual and reflection.
On the first day, participants prepare materials and build the mask’s base, learning to create form from everyday materials. The second day invites texture and expression through clay, drawing on dreams, ancestry and personal symbols. This will be followed by working with colour, adornment and sharing, as participants bring their masks — and the stories within them — to completion.
Facilitated with care and spaciousness, the workshop offers both communal and individual engagement. There are no right or wrong ways to create; participants are encouraged to follow their intuition, work at their own pace and listen to what emerges through the act of making.
This experience offers a grounding creative practice, a personal artwork and a shared space of reflection. It welcomes all who wish to explore identity, transformation and belonging through hands-on creation.
