Finissage: THE TAIL
Join us on Sunday 17 August from 15:00 to 18:00 for the finissage of THE TAIL. The performance installation by MAISON the FAUX draws from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, exploring themes of transformation and the sacrifices that are made in pursuit of one’s true identity. Tessa de Boer from MAISON the FAUX and Alma Noor (aka DJ YoungWoman) present their practices, followed by an afternoon of karaoke.
In a time when queer and trans communities are under pressure and even denied their existence, THE TAIL seeks to reframe the mermaid as a symbol of queer identity and personal transformation.
During the finissage, Alma Noor – an Amsterdam-based Egyptian DJ and co-founder of Don’t Go We’ll Fund Them – shares insight into her collaboration as DJ YoungWoman on the sonic arrangements of MAISON the FAUX’s THE TAIL. She also discusses access to trans healthcare and the importance of trans-led initiatives in the Netherlands, such as Don’t Go We’ll Fund Them, which provides crowdfunded support – as well as proceeds collected during the live performances of THE TAIL – to help trans people with surgery costs.
After the talk, the audience is invited to find their voice through a karaoke session, organised by Eastern Playgrounds, a queer collective celebrating East and Southeast Asian diasporic culture through mahjong events and karaoke nights. Adapting their signature karaoke sessions for the finissage of THE TAIL, they echo its themes of transformation through the voice, channeling The Little Mermaid’s search for her song and using karaoke as a space for queer embodiment and fluid self-making. Step into your unrealised stardom, channel your inner mermaid and help give a loving send-off to THE TAIL.
This event is in English. Admission is free.
