Performance: iTi Ritual Studies with Yonela Makoba
On 2, 3, 4 October 2026, Framer Framed hosts iTi Ritual Studies, a performance by Yonela Makoba as part of the Afrovibes Festival.
iTi Ritual Studies is a performative ritual based on the Xhosa practice iTi – an intimate tea ceremony performed in remembrance of matriarchs. Makoba performs the role of a child who sits at the feet of an elder, drinking tea out of a saucer passed down from generation to generation.
Through her performance, Makoba explores lost or otherwise hidden experiences. iTi Ritual Studies embodies an old, site-specific ritual of stories and experiences inherited from female ancestors.
iTi Ritual Studies is a residency project from Afrovibes in collaboration with Framer Framed, and the Thami Mnyele Foundation in Amsterdam. Yonela Makoba examines the relationship between land, labour, and ritual knowledge; the routes of tea circulation and colonial exchange; and how rituals change under the influence of distance, language, and archives, through the dissemination and cultural transmission of tea. The audiences gets to share in the ritual as it brings the voices of female ancestors to life.
