Marianne Riphagen is Director of Education at the Amsterdam University College (AUC). She studied at the Department of Anthropology and Development Studies of the Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Her research interests include contemporary indigenous art, economic anthropology and visual anthropology.

Marianne is the recipient of the 2006 Endeavour Europe Award and the 2009 Radboud University’s Frye Stipend. In 2011 she completed her dissertation on the subject of contemporary photomedia created by Indigenous Australians entitled Indigenous Cosmopolitans: Up-and-Coming Artists and their Photomedia Works in Australian and International Visual Art Worlds. Focusing on the artistic photographs and video works of artists Christian Thompson, Dianne Jones, Darren Siwes and Brook Andrew, Marianne examines the ways in which these acquire meaning and value within institutional art worlds.

Since then, she has worked at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, United States; at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia; and at Radboud University Nijmegen. As a lecturer, Marianne has taught Bachelor’s and Master’s students about a range of subjects, notably academic writing and research methods within the social sciences.

At present, she is setting up a new research project to investigate transnational Indigenous collaborations within visual art worlds.
