Youth Climate Emergency Action

Youth Climate Emergency Action is a campaign group voluntarily run by youth in the Republic of Korea. The youth movement emerged from the realization that the climate crisis is a failure of social structures beyond the scope of individual responsibility, and that collective political mobilization is necessary to combat the crisis. The group works within legal and democratic spaces and also relies on civil disobedience and ‘direct action’ to publicize their message to wider society. Youth Climate Emergency Action took direct action against Doosan Enerbility to oppose the export of Vietnam’s Vũng Áng Coal Fired Power Plant II,  facing civil/criminal charges brought by corporations since 2021 for their actions.

청년기후긴급행동은 기후위기가 개인이 감당할 수 없는 사회 구조의 문제라는 것을 깨달은, 그래서 이 문제를 정치적으로 대응하기 위해 모인 10~30대 청년들이 자발적으로 운영하는 사회운동 단체이다. 제도적으로 허용하는 방식으로도 활동하지만, 청년기후긴급행동의 메시지를 사회적으로 알리기 위해서라면 ‘직접행동’이라는 시민 불복종의 방식을 선택하기도 한다. 베트남 붕앙-2 석탄화력발전소 수출에 반대하기 위해 두산에너빌리티를 대상으로 직접행동을 시행했으며, 이후 2021년부터 민/형사 재판을 치르고 있다.
