Marieke van Rooy
Marieke van Rooy (1974) is a visual artist who works at the intersection of performance, installation, archival research and participatory art. She has been collaborating with the artist Domenico Mangano since 2014. Recently, she has also been staging solo performances in which she employs alter egos. These are playful and sometimes absurd characters that reflect on socio-political issues. In doing so, she weaves together personal experiences with local micro-histories and the dynamics of everyday life. By transforming herself both literally and figuratively, she creates space to engage with different kinds of audience.
For example, she created ‘Your Domestic Nightmare’, the leader of a fictional social movement. She is the initiator of the project ‘Ode to the Community’ in the new venue De Poorthuisjes in Amsterdam East. Through her alter ego Klazina and the ‘Klazien-o-theek’, she explores how creativity and play can help to bring a community together.
Mangano Van Rooy’s work has been exhibited at venues including the Melly Art Institute (Rotterdam), the Bonnefanten Museum (Maastricht), the Princessehof Museum (Leeuwarden), De Kunsthal (Rotterdam), the National Gallery (Rome) and the Jatiwangi Art Factory (Indonesia). Mangano Van Rooy were artists in residence at the Jan van Eyck Academy (Maastricht).
