About the part that art plays in a globalising society

Framer Framed

New flyer announcing an open call for a mural at de Nieuwe Meent (dNM). Using a white background, it features a photograph of a red-brick residential building behind a railway platform, with overhead cables and bare trees in view. A faint rectangular outline marks the proposed mural location on the facade. Bold, sans-serif black typography highlights “OPEN CALL for a mural,” while subtle diagonal lines referencing the train cables add movement to the design. The logos of de Appel, Framer Framed, and If I Can’t Dance are listed at the bottom.

Open Call: de Nieuwe Meent Mural (Updated)

Framer Framed is pleased to announce a new collaborative project with de Appel,  If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution and the housing cooperative de Nieuwe Meent (dNM). As part of this collaboration, we are launching an open call for the realisation of a semi-permanent mural on the North facade of the dNM building in Watergraafsmeer, Amsterdam East.

Situated in Amsterdam East, dNM is one of Amsterdam’s first housing co-operations and has recently been nominated for the Amsterdam Architecture Prize 2026. Rooted in the housing rights movement, dNM is a social, political, and architectural project completely developed through a collaborative and community-led process. dNM is an experiment in co-design, shared living, and solidarity economy. The mural will form an integral part of the building and its vision.

The mural should have a strong conceptual, poetic, and potentially political message, which reflects the principles of commons, community, co-governance, and equitable living at the heart of dNM. With this open call, we are looking for artists who are community-oriented, and combine a conceptual and relational approach in their practice. Following the co-design methodologies through which dNM came to being, we welcome applications that envision an experimental process of co-creation or dialogue with dNM, or potentially, with other relevant groups/communities in the immediate vicinity of the building.

The call is open to artists, writers, designers, architects, and activists. No prior mural experience is required, as we are interested in proposals that expand our understanding of what a mural can be or who a mural artist is. We strongly encourage applications from BIPOC, queer, trans, disabled, and non-binary practitioners, and those engaging with housing, commons, and social justice.

Please note: After receiving feedback on the open call we have decided to update the application process. The main changes concern:

• a lighter submission round without sketch and proposal for the first phase
• a more extended short-list phase with a higher artist fee

The applications that have already been submitted following the criteria of the first open call will still be considered, but the committee will focus mainly on the candidate’s affinity with the call and its objectives.

How to apply

The deadline for this open call is extended to 15 September 2026. To read more on how to apply, the timeline and the financial arrangements, please read this pdf.
