Framer Framed is launching Framer Framed Noord, a new project space for art and culture in Amsterdam-Noord where local knowledge, collective practices and artistic research come together. With this new location, Framer Framed strengthens its long-standing commitment to Amsterdam-Noord and the city as a whole, emphasising the importance of accessible art and culture in fostering social connection, imagination and shared ownership.
Framer Framed Noord will become the new home for Werkplaats Molenwijk, Framer Framed’s project space that, over the past seven years, has provided artists with residency space, art education programmes and collaborative projects with local residents. At this new location, the existing programme will continue and expand. Children, young people and adults will learn about art and culture, while residents will have room to develop their own initiatives. Artists will collaborate with the neighbourhood to create new work rooted in the local community and addressing societal themes.
Framer Framed Noord is a place for and by residents, artists and cultural partners. The programming is organised around three interconnected strands: Mee-Maken (Co-Experience), Samen Maken (Co-Create), and Zelfgemaakt (Self-Made). These come to life in two interconnected spaces: the Werkplaats, an active space for making and learning, and the Tussenkamer, a flexible area for meetings, reflection and presentations.
The new location is housed in Z369 – Social & Cultural Centre, where collaborations take place with various neighbourhood partners, such as Muziekschool Amsterdam Noord and Buurtkamer Zuideinde 369. Z369 is located in a beautiful, sustainably renovated former school building, offering multiple rooms and facilities. Below is an overview of the ongoing programmes from Framer Framed Noord.
Zelfgemaakt
Zelfgemaakt (Self-Made) is an art education programme for children, young people and adults, including an after-school art programme for students at Kolom Praktijkcollege Noord. Zelfgemaakt offers alternative ways of learning – helping participants discover who they are, what they want, how they relate to others and the world, and how to express themselves creatively – not just by learning, but by doing and experiencing together.
Traditional education often focuses on progress: acquiring knowledge, learning skills and shaping behaviour. At Framer Framed Noord, the Educational Turn takes centre stage: new methods of creating art outside traditional educational and institutional structures. This approach operates within a cultural context, emphasising collaboration, exchange and shared experiences.
Samen Maken
Samen Maken (Co-Create) focuses on projects initiated or co-developed by neighbourhood residents. The surrounding neighbourhoods hold rich creative knowledge and talent, which Framer Framed Noord supports. Examples include the weekly textile workshop Molenwijk door Elkaar, the neighbourhood initiative Karam Keuken, the construction of a traveling tandoor and bread oven, and the development of the Molentuin community garden. This programme strand explores themes such as community economy, democratisation, collective decision-making and other topics initiated by residents themselves.
Mee-Maken
Mee-Maken (Co-Experience) is all about experiencing art. The two spaces at Framer Framed Noord transform into places where art can be seen, heard, felt and sometimes even tasted. Exhibitions, performances and work by resident artists are presented. Artists in this strand explore topics like commons, ecology, food, migration and democratisation, inviting visitors to actively participate in the artistic experience.
The Werkplaats
The Werkplaats is a creative studio equipped with materials for art education and practical workshops. Children, young people and adults can learn and experiment here. Resident artists use the Werkplaats to develop new work, while neighbourhood residents can use the space for their own projects. The focus is primarily on drawing, painting and textile work.
The Tussenkamer
The Tussenkamer is a flexible space for activities bridging social and artistic practices. It is a place for development, discussion and gatherings, where visitors, residents, artists and collectives collaborate on projects, explore the reading area, organise exhibitions, give presentations or plan communal dinners.
Both spaces are available for rent by cultural institutions, collectives, artists and neighbourhood residents with goals that align with Framer Framed Noord, at a rate appropriate to the applicant. For inquiries, contact noord@framerframed.nl.
