Onder de Streep: a national campaign on income inequality

Framer Framed is pleased to support Onder de Streep, a national campaign on income inequality with a specific focus on the working poor, initiated and designed by artist Rune Peitersen and designer Yuri Veerman.

Onder de Streep explores a simple but pressing question: how can so many people in a wealthy country like the Netherlands work and still struggle to make ends meet? The campaign uses the familiar format of a receipt to make personal financial situations visible. Each receipt presents a straightforward calculation of income minus expenses, showing the money left to spend. Based on real financial data shared by numerous participants, the receipts offer a snapshot of what remains at the end of the month. Some show very little left over, while others represent people with more disposable income than they need. In this way, Onder de Streep brings different financial realities together in the public space, making income inequality more tangible and accessible.

The project was developed with the support of Rabo ArtLab and Quiet NL. Through Quiet NL, Peitersen and Veerman connected with people experiencing in-work poverty and spoke with them about their experiences of working while living on a limited income. Participants shared their financial information and gave permission for it to be used as part of the campaign. The campaign launches in the second week of September across both larger and smaller cities in the Netherlands. Large-format receipts are installed on the façades of public and semi-public buildings, accompanied by a nationwide poster campaign. With Onder de Streep, Peitersen and Veerman bring the subject of working poverty into the everyday environment.
