In this episode of the Framer Framed Podcast, we go behind the scenes of Zelfgemaakt!, a long-running cultural education project by Framer Framed in collaboration with Kolom Praktijkcollege Noord, for the second time. In episode 14, we heard from Kolom Praktijkcollege students Ikra, Rana, and Rumaya. This time we’re handing the mic to the teachers.
Savitri Bergraaf talks with art teachers Gina Sanches and Diede Visser, who built and shaped the project together from the very beginning.
For more than two and a half years, students came together weekly at Werkplaats Molenwijk in Amsterdam-Noord to make art, experiment, and engage in conversation with one another. Gina and Diede look back on a working method that developed organically over time: playful, free, and detached from the school-based thinking of right or wrong. They talk about the fixed tea circle that initiated every lesson; the lessons that took unexpected turns because of what students brought into the room; and other memorable moments — from interviewing animals at the petting zoo to distributing 437 letters with art assignments in mailboxes around the neighborhood.
What Zelfgemaakt! is really about is ownership, self-confidence, and equality: what happens when students get to shape the lesson themselves? Or even literally turn the classroom upside down? And what did the teachers themselves learn from those as makers? Gina and Diede share what they believe makes Zelfgemaakt! valuable, and what they’d like to pass on to Framer Framed and other institutions. The project is now being continued through culture coaches at Framer Framed Noord.
