Melting Dutch Pot with Anas Chao
Last November, artist Anas Chao took over the kitchen at Framer Framed Noord on three occasions. He cooked an improvised lunch using ingredients brought by the participants. In his project, Anas Chao explores how histories of migration are embedded in our recipes and the ingredients we choose.
On Monday 30 March and 11 May 2026, he will continue his Melting Dutch Pot sessions. Whilst Anas is cooking, you can join the Textile workshop or help with the cooking.
Before the sessions, Chao holds a raffle with the participants of his Melting Pot programme. The ticket drawn determines which category of ingredients needs to be brought along. The tickets drawn can fall into one of the following categories: vegetables, herbs, carbohydrates, beans, as well as something your family really likes or something that used to be unavailable but can now be found at the market. At 10:00, Chao collects all the ingredients, and by 12:30, a lavish lunch is on the table, to which an ingredient, an idea, or a story has been added.
Every Monday, Framer Framed Noord also hosts the Textile Workshop, run by Molenwijk Door Elkaar. Participants work on their sewing, embroidery or textile projects. Two local volunteers are on hand to help with questions about sewing machines and other techniques. Participants in Anas’s Melting Dutch Pot lunch can join the Textile Workshop whilst the food is cooking, read in the other room, or strike up a conversation with one another.
Anas Chao was born and raised in Saudi Arabia, but his parents are from Taiwan. As a result, he has come to know both countries and their cuisines well. In his practice, he often takes this meeting of cultures as his starting point and explores how nationalism and capitalism play a part in shaping identity and a sense of home. Previously, he ran a dumpling-making workshop at Werkplaats Molenwijk as part of his project Ministry of Dumplings Affairs, in which he asked participants to bring fillings from home. According to Chao, the filling of a dumpling reveals where you have been and which cultures’ ingredients you bring with you. The different fillings served as the starting point for a dialogue about culture, history and memories of home. This time, a similar assignment offered a glimpse into people’s kitchens and the reasons behind their choice of ingredients. During lunch, Chao collects stories and analyses the choices of specific ingredients, which he will later incorporate into a visual art form.
