Through video, photography and Cyber Textile with AI, Almagul Menlibayeva reinterprets contemporary processes in Central Asia through mythologies and collective memory, centring women’s autonomy via the epistemic heritage of nomadic feminism and critically reflecting on the consequences of environmental degradation and modernisation.
Menlibayeva has exhibited at international biennales in Venice, Sydney, South Korea, Sharjah, Thailand and Ulaanbaatar. She held the solo exhibition Transformation at the Grand Palais, Paris, in 2016. Among her recent projects are a major multi-channel video installation on the Kazakh Famine at the 2023 Sharjah Biennale, as well as the Digital Biennale in Hamburg 2025, curated by Ulrich Schrauth, in collaboration with sound artist and musician German Popov (OMFO, Amsterdam). Currently (2025–2026), she is presenting a retrospective solo exhibition, I Understand Everything, curated by Gridthiya Gaweewong (Artistic Director of the Jim Thompson Art Foundation, Bangkok, Thailand), at the Almaty Museum of Arts (AMA), Kazakhstan. She is a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
