Workshop: Oh Sh!t, You Again? | Methodologies of Migration by Ishani Chatterjee

On 16 November, Framer Framed presents the workshop Oh Sh!t, You Again? with design researcher, architect and performing artist Ishani Chatterjee. Joined by artist Soph Boobyer and architectural designer Kaan Hiçyılmaz, Chatterjee invites participants to an afternoon of collective exploration and exchange, embracing the challenges and struggles faced by non-EU practitioners in the cultural sector while experimenting with the methodology of LARPing (Live Action Role-Playing).

Through participatory performative conversations set against the backdrop of a round-table parliamentary setup in the Netherlands, participants mimic the process of discussing migration policies for ‘highly skilled migrants’. Beginning with scripted agenda points as an introduction to the parliament, they take on roles of officials representing the current government. They debate the negatives and positives of these policies, making room for their own questions, struggles, misinformation, and ideas on how best to navigate the repetitive process of living, working, and surviving in solidarity as migrants in the Netherlands.

The workshop stems from the research project Methodologies of Migration, exploring the nuances of immigration in the context of the Netherlands – specifically focused on ‘highly skilled migrant artists/designers’ who choose to work as self-employed individuals. The project examines how acquiring a visa and its subsequent extensions becomes a challenging process of applying, waiting, trying, failing, picking oneself up, and then applying again. It questions the complexities of immigration laws on a global scale, examined alongside collective understandings and practices connected to art institutions and the graduates experiencing them.

This event is especially directed towards non-EU/EEA self-employed artists in their orientation year, about to begin their orientation year, or who have successfully finished their orientation year, but it is open to everyone.

Admission is free, but registration is mandatory (maximum 15 participants).

This workshop is part of a research project titled Methodologies of Migration, co-hosted by Framer Framed and supported by the Creative Industries Fund NL.
