Angèle Etoundi Essamba
Angèle Etoundi Essamba (b. 1962) one of the most acclaimed female African photographers of her generation. When she was 10, she moved to Paris from Cameroon, and in 1982 to the Netherlands. She graduated from the University of Applied Photography in Amsterdam.
She records in an aesthetic way a vision on the African woman and the African culture, giving a new interpretation of the contemporary Africa. In her work, she challenges and breaks with stereotypical representations of women, instead she chooses to give her subjects meaning and greatness. Etoundi Essamba has had a number of solo exhibitions in Paris, The Hague, Nairobi, Amsterdam and Barcelona, since her first exhibition in 1985 in Maison Descartes in Amsterdam. In 2016, Essamba was a participating artist in the Framer Framed group exhibition What We Have Overlooked, curated by Mirjam Westen in Amsterdam from 30 June to 21 August.
