198 Contemporary Arts and Learning London

198 Contemporary Arts and Learning is a centre for visual arts, education and creative enterprise located on Railton Road, Brixton in south London. The centre’s vision is to be an influential national model of artistic excellence, pushing creative boundaries while giving voice and space to under-represented artists, communities and cultures.

The artistic programme provides a platform for participation, exchange and dialogue for artists, partners and diverse audiences. The exhibitions and artist led projects provide a framework for events which bring together individuals and organisations inside and outside of the arts to engage in debate and creative practice. The centre’s work is particularly focused on issues of social inclusion and diversity and seeks to engage with global issues while being rooted in the history of their locality.

198’s work is framed by their local communities and the history of the Brixton uprisings from which the centre sprung; informed by a policy context that calls for greater action on equality, and shaped by unfulfilled demand for diverse visual arts and new pathways to creative careers.

Stakeholders of the centre include artists and curators of colour, young people of colour seeking careers in the creative and cultural industries, audiences seeking more diverse visual art, the local community, partner arts organisations and partner community organisations.
