About the part that art plays in a globalising society

Jaya Pelupessy

Jaya Pelupessy (1989) is a visual artist working with photography. He explores the meaning of images in photographs, installations and 16mm film. Through an analysis of technical reproduction processes, he questions the relationships between the copy, the original and the end product in relation to the process. Pelupessy is fascinated by the increasingly important role photography plays in our daily lives. We increasingly perceive the world through the camera lens: we share moments and experiences through reproductions. In this way, we direct our own reality. In combinations of found and original visual material, he uses the individual elements of these reproduction processes in an alternative way to construct his images. This often results in “loops” within his work, in which reproductions are reproduced again. In this way, the work makes us reflect on how images are created and what that means for our perception of the world around us.
