Yaseen Aslam
When Yaseen Aslam was made redundant from his IT job in 2006, he turned to the driving industry as a private hire driver in London while he looked for another job. However he stayed in the trade and was one of the first few drivers who worked for Uber when they launched in London in 2013. In 2014, Yaseen began organizing drivers, leading to the landmark Aslam vs. Uber case in 2015 – the UK’s first legal challenge against the gig economy for workers’ rights. Since then, he has played a key role in establishing various driver organizations and trade unions, spearheading numerous campaigns and direct actions against app-based employers. In 2020, Yaseen founded the International Alliance of App-based Transport Workers (IAATW), expanding his advocacy globally. He has since been instrumental in organizing drivers not just in the UK but across 23 different countries, championing fair treatment and labor rights in the gig economy.
