Joan van Barneveld
Joan van Barneveld (Veghel, 1978) studied at the Academie Beeldende Kunsten (ABK, Academy of Fine Arts) in Maastricht (The Netherlands) between 1997 and 2001. Currently, he teaches at the Jan van Eyck Academy, also located in Maastricht. His work primarily consists of paintings, but also contains some installations, such as ‘Kurt Cobain’s Greenhouse’ – a life-size reconstruction of the room in which Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994. Most of Van Barneveld’s work takes the form of dark, sometimes completely black paintings in which one can slowly discern landscapes and musical stages. In 2014, he created and published the book ‘Into longing, vast rock’, in collaboration with Onomatopee.
Van Barneveld’s work has been exhibited at het Domein Sittard, Paul Loya Gallery Los Angeles, GEM The Hague, Coda Museum Apeldoorn, LMAK Gallery New York and Raumfuerkunst Aachen. Some of his work is in the permanent collections of the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht, Museum Het Domein Sittard and SCHUNCK* in Heerlen.
