The One-Straw Revolution, curated by iLiana Fokianaki is the first realisation of Fokianaki’s research into permaculture as a model for exhibition-making. The exhibition takes the form of an alternative ecology, exploring sustainable futures through artistic practices that call for de-growth. This exhibition is inspired by The One-Straw Revolution: An Introduction to Natural Farming (1975), an influential book on ecological thought and practice by Japanese farmer and philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka. His work is one of many that prompted scientists and scholars to coin the term “permaculture” as a shorthand for “permanent culture” – a philosophy and practice that emphasises working in harmony with and not against the ecosystems that we are a part of and dependent on.

The One-Straw Revolution exhibition focuses on the core concepts that laid the foundation for the term permaculture: care for living with others, care for fair share. The participating artists pay homage to the main principles of Indigenous and feminist ecological thought and practice, which define sustainable ways of living and tangible forms of interspecies co-existence. Several artists focus on human disconnection from nature and our surroundings, highlighting the need to re-affirm our connections. Others trace the role of power systems and models of governance in the destruction of our environment and the disruption of interspecies kinships, as well as the corrosion of invaluable knowledge systems on ecosystem balance.

The One-Straw Revolution, samengesteld door iLiana Fokianaki is de eerste presentatie van Fokianaki’s onderzoek naar permacultuur als model voor het maken van tentoonstellingen. Deze tentoonstelling is geïnspireerd op The One-Straw Revolution: An Introduction to Natural Farming (1975), een boek over ecologisch denken en handelen van de Japanse boer en filosoof Masanobu Fukuoka.Fukuoka’s werk heeft eraan bijgedragen dat wetenschappers en geleerden de term ‘permacultuur’ gebruikten als afkorting voor ‘permanente cultuur’ – een filosofie en handelswijze die de nadruk legt op het werken in harmonie met – in plaats van tegenwerken van – de ecosystemen waar we deel van uitmaken en afhankelijk van zijn.

De tentoonstelling The One-Straw Revolution richt zich op de kerngedachten die achter de term permacultuur schuil gaan: zorg dragen voor het leven met anderen en de opbrengst van de oogst eerlijk delen. De deelnemende kunstenaars brengen een ode aan de belangrijkste principes van Inheems en feministisch ecologisch denken. Zij schetsen het manieren van duurzaam handelen en het leven in co-existentie met andere diersoorten. Sommige kunstenaars gaan in op de afstand die tussen natuur en mens is ontstaan en zij benadrukken de noodzaak om die verbindingen opnieuw te leggen. Anderen gaan in op de systemen die schuil gaan achter de vernietiging van ons milieu en de oorzaak zijn van de verstoring van verwantschappen tussen soorten. Want, zo stellen zij, met dit proces gaat onschatbare kennis met betrekking tot het evenwicht van het ecosysteem verloren.
