The exhibition Tanah Merdeka brings together works by the Indonesian art collective Taring Padi and various collaborators to reflect on the concept of land and its socio-political implications through a cross-cultural network of solidarity. Tanah Merdeka is presented by Framer Framed in partnership with Brazilian Jewish cultural centre Casa do Povo and Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST).

Drawing from the Indonesian expression ‘tanah merdeka’ (liberated land), the exhibition sees land as a broad concept with many complexities. It considers forces of extraction, preservation, colonisation, occupation, identity, and emancipation, and thinks of land not only as a physical and territorial site to be protected, defended, and reclaimed. Tanah Merdeka is also as a spiritual, cosmological, and vibrant space that enables different forms of interrelation, conversation, and genuine exchange beyond boundaries.

The hand-out includes an introductory text by Framer Framed, a short history of Taring Padi by member Alexander Supartono and a special essay by Casa do Povo director, Benjamin Seroussi.

De tentoonstelling Tanah Merdeka brengt werken van het Indonesische kunstenaarscollectief Taring Padi en diverse bevriende kunstenaars samen rondom het thema ‘land’ en de sociaal-politieke implicaties ervan. De tentoonstelling wordt gepresenteerd bij Framer Framed in samenwerking met het Joods-Braziliaanse culturele centrum Casa do Povo en de Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST).

De tentoonstelling is gebaseerd op de Indonesische uitdrukking ’tanah merdeka’ (bevrijd het land) en kijkt naar land als een veelomvattend concept dat complexe vraagstukken met zich meebrengt. Het onderzoekt de dynamiek van extractie, behoud, kolonisatie, bezetting, identiteit en emancipatie. Het beschouwt land niet alleen als een fysieke en territoriale plek die beschermd, verdedigd en teruggewonnen moet worden, maar ook als een spirituele, kosmologische ruimte die verschillende vormen van verbinding, dialoog en oprechte uitwisseling over grenzen heen mogelijk maakt.

De hand-out is inclusief een inleidende tekst van Framer Framed, een korte geschiedenis van Taring Padi door lid Alexander Supartono en een speciaal essay van de directeur van Casa do Povo, Benjamin Seroussi.
