Each year the organisation presents a variety of exhibitions alongside diverse cultural and educational programs at its main location in Amsterdam Oost, as well as its project space Werkplaats Molenwijk in Amsterdam Noord.<\/p>\n

With the belief that critical and contextualised programming is best explored with an open door and low threshold, Framer Framed\u2019s public programs are always free of charge and resources are made readily available to emerging and established local and transnational communities, artists, and curators to turn their own ideas into tangible realities. Visitors are seen as co-creators and are given the time, support, and facilities to put their own musings to practice. This invitational approach opens avenues of shared ownership, allowing collaborators to engage in and with their own networks, niches, and subcultures.<\/p>\n

Framer Framed regularly commissions and co-produces new artworks and publications, organises international projects, and houses a bookshop and open reading space.<\/p>\n

History & Mission<\/h5>\n

Framer Framed began in 2009, at a time when many curators at cultural memory organisations were confronted with comparable questions around their work practice. Specialists from ethnological, cultural history, and contemporary art institutions alike came up against unwanted boundaries of their institutional frameworks, many of which were created in the 19th century and for a long time were seemingly untouchable. It was from this point that Framer Framed\u2019s initial inquiry began: What is the role of museums and cultural institutions in a globalizing society?<\/em><\/p>\n

Early contributors were \u2013 along with current Framer Framed directors Cas Bool<\/a> and Josien Pieterse<\/a> \u2013 Meta Knol<\/a>, curator of the Centraal Museum at the time; George Petitjean<\/a>, then curator of the Museum of Contemporary Aboriginal Art; Wim Manuhutu, who was director of Maluku Museum dedicated to the Moluccas; and Nancy Jouwe<\/a>, director of PACE Papua Heritage Foundation. These members formed an editorial board, bringing a unique perspective to suggested exhibitions and critical debates. The participating organisations were invited to submit their upcoming exhibitions and running projects for critical public reading sessions (see the Framer Framed video archive<\/a> for examples).<\/p>\n

What started off as an independent initiative to challenge the prevailing discourse of the Dutch cultural sector, has rapidly evolved into the public platform that Framer Framed is today. After opening its physical doors in 2014 at its former location in the Tolhuistuin, Framer Framed continues to be regarded as an innovative force in the arts sector thanks to its inclusive and democratising approach. At its current location in the former Oostergasfabriek on Oranje-Vrijstaatkade, Framer Framed\u2019s generous opening hours combined with its broad public programming contribute to the steady patronage of a diverse audience.<\/p>\n

Since the 2018 opening of Werkplaats Molenwijk \u2013 a community space, artist residency, and research platform \u2013 Framer Framed is deepening its connection with its neighbourhoods while exploring the contemporary relationship of artists to communities. The development of skills has also become central; with a focus on introducing young people to local artists and international themes, Framer Framed offers various educational settings in collaboration with partners in primary, secondary, and higher education. For Framer Framed, community is tied with learning \u2013 and education means encouraging curiosity, creativity and critical independent thinking and analysis. Today, at the core of Framer Framed\u2019s approach is the question: Whose story is it, who is speaking or represented (by whom)?<\/em><\/p>\n

By introducing multifaceted stories and constructing different conceptions of history and contemporary positioning, Framer Framed specialises in making and providing space. By way of thinking together with the public and practitioners about the ‘framer\u2019 and the \u2018framed\u2019, a form of ownership and cultural citizenship continues to emerge.<\/p>\n

Vision & Position<\/h5>\n

Framer Framed is an independent organisation that seeks to transform the arts landscape into an inclusive and just playing field. We create space for marginalised stories and realities and support those who do not occupy an obvious position of power. We see this as an added value for our diverse society. Guided by the conviction that accessibility and a low threshold are crucial, we always offer our public activities free of charge.<\/p>\n

Framer Framed makes an unconditional commitment to emancipation, protest, change and suppressed knowledge. No account of history is ever complete \u2013 ours included. We make space for ‘situated knowledge’, in which personal memories and stories excluded by the historical or cultural canon take center stage. The concept of ‘situated knowledge’ comes from feminist sociologist Donna Haraway. It is partial in both senses of the word: partisan and incomplete.<\/p>\n

Our programming always positions itself critically in relation to the dominant art discourse. By way of artistic practices, archival research and co-creation, we bring forgotten stories to the fore and explore urgent social and historical questions. In doing so, we pose questions about what an art institution can and should be in this time, this world, and this city.<\/p>\n

Framer Framed seeks to make another future possible: by thinking, imagining and acting \u2013 not separate from historical or social developments, but situated firmly within them. Framer Framed focuses on socio-political debates, issues and histories through the lens of art and culture, archives, research, and makers. Our physical space is not merely a location, but a home that gives visitors \u2013 read: participants \u2013 a sense of belonging, and where we put into practice what we advocate.<\/p>\n
